University of Nebraska, Diane Barger, Midwest Clarifest

It was a glorious day spent of music making. Hosted by: Dr. Diane Barger, UNL’s Hixson-Lied Professor of Clarinet. and celebrating its 20th year, Midwest ClariFest 2017 feature guest artist Dr. Stephanie Zelnick from the University of Kansas. What a treat it was to hearStephanie play! And what a beautiful player she is!

Judi Dietz from Judi’s Woodwind Shop (www.judiswwshop.com) came and brought Silverstein ligatures, LefreQues for all wind instruments, clarinet jewelry, Chesher barrels, and silk swabs.

Robert Dickason  came with his expertise as a certified Straubinger pad technician, among his many other repair technician talents. He offered free instrument seal checks with his Magnehelic tool.

Larkin Sanders gave a D’Addario presentation and gave away free reeeds. Dr. Sanders is a native of Branson, Missouri and currently lives in Kansas City, Missouri. She recently completed her Doctor of Music degree in clarinet performance and a certificate in arts administration at Florida State University. She is also a Reserve Method Artist for D’Addario Woodwinds for which she frequently gives masterclasses and lectures. In addition to her activities as a clarinetist and teacher, Dr. Sanders is also a composer who has a fondness for songs and unique chamber ensembles. Most notably, Larkin is the founder, executive-artistic director, and clarinetist of the Taneycomo Festival Orchestra, a summer music festival in Branson, Missouri.

Our Lisa Canning was there and gave a free lecture on “How to think about clarinet selection to develop your voicing, concept of sound production, and ultimately your unique musical voice.” She also had a nice selection of Buffet clarinets and barrels and a steady stream of customers.

The day concluded with a wonderful performance by Dr Barger’s clarinet studio.
